Defensible space is the single most important action a Front Range homeowner can take to protect their property from wildfire — and it is now the primary metric insurance carriers use when evaluating your policy. Documented defensible space work is the direct path to maintaining coverage and qualifying for premium credits that can offset your mitigation costs significantly.

Timberline creates and documents compliant defensible space across three zones per Colorado State Forest Service Home Ignition Zone guidelines:

Zone 1 — Immediate Zone (0–5 ft):

The area immediately surrounding your home and any attached structures. We remove all dead and dying vegetation, wood piles, and combustible materials that could ignite your structure directly. This zone requires the most aggressive treatment and is the one most commonly cited in insurance inspection deficiencies.

Zone 2 — Intermediate Zone (5–30 ft):

Vegetation is selectively thinned, ladder fuels are removed, and spacing between trees and shrubs is established to slow fire spread and prevent it from reaching the structure. Ground-level combustibles are cleared and low-hanging branches are removed to eliminate the pathways fire uses to move from the ground into the tree canopy.

Zone 3 — Outer Zone (30–100 ft):

Fuel load is reduced across the broader property perimeter. Trees and shrubs are thinned, dead material is removed, and continuity of vegetation that allows fire to travel across the landscape is broken. This zone is particularly critical on sloped terrain, where fire travels faster uphill toward structures.
